‘Marvel’s The Inhumans’ In the Works at ABC, Will Premiere in IMAX Theaters

     November 14, 2016

If you were holding out a last bit of hope for that derailed The Inhumans movie, I believe the nail is officially in the coffin — but there’s good news. You’ll still get to see The Inhumans on the big screen (the biggest screens, in fact), it’s just going to be a TV show instead of a movie. Marvel has officially greenlit an Inhumans TV series for its ABC superhero lineup, and the first two episodes will screen in IMAX theaters nationwide.

Marvel Television, Disney/ABC TelevisionGroup and IMAX will team for the new Inhumans series, which will film entirely on IMAX cameras and premiere in a two-week theatrical run at the beginning of September 2017, before moving into ABC’s fall line-up. The deal marks the first time a live-action television series has premiered via theatrical run before its network debut. It is also IMAX’s first time co-financing a TV series.

The Inhumans was set to receive a film adaptation for years as a new branch of the ever-expanding MCU, with the original release date set for 2018. But after a shift in the dynamic between Marvel’s film and television divisions, and the addition of Ant-Man and The Wasp to the already crowded theatrical calendar, Marvel Films dropped The Inhumans from it’s schedule.

Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, and introduced to Marvel Comics in 1965, The Inhumans follows a hybrid human-Kree race of superpowered mutants, each of whom has their own signature ability meant to restore an evolutionary equilibrium. While the Inhumans have appeared on Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, the long-running series’ most beloved characters have yet to make their live-action screen debut. Per the press release, The Inhumans  tv series “will explore the never-before-told epic adventure of Black Bolt and the royal family.”

“This unprecedented alliance represents a bold, innovative approach to launching great TV content for a worldwide audience,” said Ben Sherwood, co-chairman, Disney Media Networks and president, Disney|ABC Television Group. “It highlights Disney|ABC’s unrelenting commitment to finding new and creative ways to showcasing our very best programming and increasing global engagement and reach.”

“This first-of-its-kind multi-platform production, distribution and marketing agreement brings together Marvel Television’s unique brand of entertainment, ABC’s unparalleled audience and IMAX’s brand and global fanboy demographic,” said IMAX CEO, Rich Gelfond. “It also takes our decades-long relationship with The Walt Disney Company to a whole new level, jointly breaking new ground in the industry. We are confident our exhibition partners will be excited to work with us on this innovative launch of a series across the IMAX network.”
