First THE MARTIAN Picture Reveals Matt Damon as Stranded Astronaut Mark Watney

     May 23, 2015

Well, this looks a bit familiar. Roughly a year after popping up in outer space as Dr. Mann in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, Matt Damon is decked out in astronaut attire yet again in the first image from Ridley Scott’s The Martian. Damon leads the big screen adaptation of the Andy Weir novel as Mark Watney, an astronaut who’s presumed dead and left behind by his crew. However, Watney actually survived the nasty dust storm and now he’s got to figure out how to survive on the hostile planet with limited resources and no way of calling for help.

The Playlist tracked down the image on the Spanish site, but it looks to be a scan from Empire Magazine. Check out the first The Martian picture for yourself below. The film also stars Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Donald Glover, and is due in theaters in 3D on November 25th.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Martian:

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, THE MARTIAN features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.
