‘The Martian’ Producer Aditya Sood and NASA’s Dr. Drew Feustal on Science & Sci-Fi

     December 22, 2015

In anticipation of the release of Ridley Scott’s Golden Globe-nominated film The Martian on Digital HD, 20th Century Fox invited a select group of journalists to visit NASA’s Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center and Space Center Houston to get a glimpse at the real science behind the box-office blockbuster. In addition to touring the expansive exhibit space, we were able to sit down with the film’s producer Aditya Sood and consultant/NASA astronaut Dr. Drew Feustal to talk about putting the “science” in the science-fiction film.

Since The Martian has received well-deserved acclaim for the amount of accurate science depicted in the film, we asked Sood and Feustal about fact versus fiction in the movie. We also tested their survivability and imagination by asking how well they think they’d survive in Mark Watney’s boots. And since The Martian has been a critical and box office success while also bringing sound science to the big screen, we ask Sood and Feustal on what role they think entertainment plays in science and math education.

You can bring Mark Watney and his life-saving science skills home for yourself with The Martian, available on Digital HD now; look for the Blu-ray/DVD on January 12th. Check out our video interview with Sood and Feustal below:

Here’s the official The Martian synopsis:

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel.
