THE MUPPETS TV Show Will Be an “Adult” Mockumentary

     April 22, 2015

When The Muppets returns to TV it will be something to behold. You may also find yourself thinking that it almost feels current, but wonder if this approach would have better suited ABC between 2006 and the time Parks & Rec wound down in early 2015. Then again, there could be a void for the kind of aesthetic conceit they are going for and it could strike a vein. Who knows? I know I don’t. Never listen to me.

But you can listen to EW (in this instance, at least), who comes bearing news about how The Muppets TV show will manifest at ABC. It will be shot mockumentary style (think the aforementioned Parks & Rec or The Office) and will focus on the “more adult” aspects of the day-to-day existence of these felt and blood characters.

Here’s the official synopsis from ABC:

The Muppets return to prime time with a contemporary, documentary-style show that—for the first time ever—will explore the Muppets’ personal lives and relationships, both at home and at work, as well as romances, break-ups, achievements, disappointments, wants and desires; a more adult Muppet show, for kids of all ages.

Apparently the goal is to lightly mock the soap opera approach ABC mainstays like Grey’s Anatomy. All jokes aside, that’s something I’d actually be interested in checking out. Note that this is only in the pilot stage, but there are talks of a direct-to-series order (if that’s the case then there’s a strong likelihood we’ll actually see this thing).
