For those who got a heaping ton of the heebie-jeebies from Michael Ealy’s turn on the thankfully cancelled The Following, get ready for your not-so-long-awaited re-up. The first trailer from The Perfect Guy, courtesy of A Single Shot helmer David M. Rosenthal, features ample time witnessing Ealy, playing the obsessive, over-protective new boyfriend of Sanaa Lathan, putting his all into the role of a total, irrefutable creep, and that would be the exact pull of the story. There’s a trashy zip to films like this, focused on the overblown melodramatic fears that go off into diabolical, often fatal directions. And that’s Morris Chestnut, hot off some solid work on the previous season of Nurse Jackie, as Lathan’s commitment-phobe ex-boyfriend who begins to have second thoughts about putting a ring on it when he sees Ealy romancing her. This, thankfully, looks more knowingly trashy than most of its ilk, and that might just be due to Rosenthal, whose previous film was a tightly edited, atmospheric thriller with a solid lead performance from Sam Rockwell. Maybe he’ll finesse similar performances from Lathan, Ealy, and Chestnut, and give the cosmopolitan environs a similar melancholic glow.
Here’s the official synopsis:
After a painful breakup, successful lobbyist Leah Vaughn (Sanaa Lathan) jumps into a passionate relationship with a charming stranger (Michael Ealy). When her ex-boyfriend (Morris Chestnut) resurfaces in her life she has to figure out who she should trust and who she should fear.
The Perfect Guy will be released by Screen Gems on September 11th. Watch the trailer below.
