New Trailer for Pedro Almodovar’s THE SKIN I LIVE IN

     June 20, 2011

Pedro Almodovar can usually be counted on for odd movies that feel outside of the box, but his latest film The Skin I Live In looks like it could reach previously unattained weirdo heights for the director. The film premiered at Cannes last month and is already set for a fall release stateside, so pre-release footage of the surreal Antonio Banderas-starred plastic surgery thriller has been gradually finding its way to the internet over the last few weeks.

Today a new trailer has been released that promises even more vibrant cinematography and body-stocking clad fight scenes than ever before. Even viewed in this electric guitar-backed 60-second clip, The Skin I Live In doesn’t look like anything the director has attempted before or like any other movie coming out in the next few months. Hit the jump to this new trailer in all its kinky glory.

The new clip doesn’t show a hell of a lot more footage than the teaser released during the Cannes Film Festival, but it’s still nice to see anything from the movie. This will be a bit of a departure for the Oscar-winning director of All About My Mother, Talk To Her, and Volver as it’s a hyper-stylized (ok that part isn’t new for him) violent thriller film that Almodovar admits was influenced by Fritz Lang and the classic French horror film Eyes Without A Face. Almodovar based his script on Thierry Jonquet’s novel Tarantula and it sounds delightfully twisted.

The Skin I Live In is definitely a big change of pace for the director, but despite the grisly subject matter expect it to have his typical exuberant and fun tone. As the trailer suggests, European audiences will get to sample The Skin I Live In at the end of August while all us cheeseburger-eating North Americans will be stuck waiting until the fall. Presumably that’s so that the movie can make a festival run at Toronto and Venice to gather some more press and awards buzz. Hopefully the entire film will have the same manic energy as the trailer, because at the moment it looks like this could be a ludicrously entertaining ride that thankfully won’t insult the audience’s intelligence. After a few more mind-numbing months of watching slow motion CGI explosions through the end of blockbuster season, that’ll be just the type of entertainment we need.

Here’s the synopsis:

“Ever since his wife was burned in a car crash, Dr. Robert Ledgard, an eminent plastic surgeon, has been interested in creating a new skin with which he could have saved her. After twelve years, he manages to cultivate a skin that is a real shield against every assault. In addition to years of study and experimentation, Robert needed a further three things: no scruples, an accomplice and a human guinea pig. Scruples were never a problem. Marilia, the woman who looked after him from the day he was born, is his most faithful accomplice. And as for the human guinea pig…”
