‘The Week Of’ Trailer Has Adam Sandler Struggling to Plan a Wedding

     February 27, 2018

Netflix has released a new The Week Of trailer. As part of their ongoing agreement to have Adam Sandler supply them with content, the latest feature has Sandler playing a middle-class father determined to pay for his daughter’s wedding despite the insistence of the wealthier groom’s father (Chris Rock). Hijinks ensue because poverty.

The movie looks astoundingly cheap, and perhaps that’s a conscious choice of director/co-writer Robert Smigel to emphasize the approach Sandler’s character has to the wedding. And yet it also doesn’t look particularly funny or heartwarming. It’s basically just a bunch of sitcom set-ups and Sandler phoning it in. It’s kind of remarkable to see him in something like The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) where he’s giving a genuinely good performance, and here where he’s basically just getting paid to hang out with Chris Rock for a few weeks. It will get dumped on Netflix and he’ll move on to the next Netflix movie. It’s a great deal for everyone involved except the people who actually have to watch it.

For those keeping count, this will be the fourth Sandler movie for Netflix after The Ridiculous Six, The Do-Over, and Sandy Wexler. Sandler used to be a major draw at the box office, and while he still does the Hotel Transylvania movies, his last live-action feature that saw wide theatrical release was 2015’s Pixels, which only made $78 million in the U.S.

Check out The Week Of trailer below. The film hits Netflix on April 27th, and also stars Steve Buscemi and Rachel Dratch.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Week Of:

The Week Of tells the story of a devoted, middle class father (Adam Sandler) determined to pay for his daughter’s wedding despite the prodding of the wealthier father of the groom (Chris Rock). A series of calamities forces the dads (and their families) to come together and endure the longest week of their lives.
