‘The Woods’ Trailer Finds Adam Wingard Conjuring Evil for Some Unlucky Campers

     May 10, 2016

So, how are you? Did you have a good lunch? Get enough sleep last night? I hope you did, because the trailer for Adam Wingard‘s The Woods just arrived and all hope for me getting a good night’s sleep seems dashed at this point. This should have been expected, considering the fact that Wingard is the man behind You’re Next and The Guest, two of the most stylish, strange, and sensational horror films to hit theaters this decade. Still, there’s something distinctly and immediately unsettling about what we see in the fleeting scenes that we get in The Woods trailer.

Though the footage gleaned here does not have the sheen of his last two films, one can rightly expect a unique perspective on the terror-within-nature sub-genre with The Woods, if only because Wingard is once again reteaming with his regular writer and collaborator Simon Barrett. There are, however, a few major differences right off the bat. The aesthetic is first and foremost, but then there’s also the cast, which includes James Allen McCune, Callie Hernandez, Brandon Scott, Valorie Curry, Corbin Reid, and Wes Robinson, none of whom are particularly well known for anything before this. Then there’s the general feeling of the endless, open maze of the outdoors, as compared to the constraints of home and a hometown in Wingard’s previous pictures.

Regardless, The Woods has just skyrocketed toward the very top of my most anticipated movies of the fall list, and early word from those who have seen the film has been incredibly positive thus far. The rest of us will get to see the finished product on September 16th, well over a month before Halloween hits, but the latest film from the leading auteur of modern-day horror doesn’t need the bolster of holiday traffic to grab attention.
