THOR: THE DARK WORLD Adds Richard Brake and Clive Russell as Captain of the Elite Einherjar and Thor’s Brother Tyr, the God of War

Director Alan Taylor’s sequel Thor: The Dark World has added two veteran actors in heroic roles.  First up is Richard Brake, who is making the jump from DC to Marvel (fans of Batman Begins may remember him as Joe Chill, the hoodlum who murdered Bruce Wayne’s parents).  Joining him will be Clive Russell, an imposing Brit perhaps best known for playing Captain Tanner in Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

Thor: The Dark World, starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba and Kat Dennings, opens November 8th, 2013.  Hit the jump for more casting details.

richard-brake-thor-2-the-dark-worldDeadline reports that Brake will join as a captain of the elite warriors known as the Einherjar.  In Norse mythology, these are the “lone warriors” who die in battle and are brought to Valhalla by the valkyries.  In the Marvel world, the Einherjar were led by Ander and were responsible for training Thor.  It’s unclear at this point whether Brake will indeed be playing Ander.  Brake is currently filming Ridley Scott’s The Counselor, which stars Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt and Cameron Diaz.

Russell will receive a bit more powerful role as Tyr, Thor’s older brother and Asgard’s God of War.  Unlike Loki, Tyr is Odin’s natural son.  The brothers have a contentious relationship at best and Thor may find himself with yet another adversary in addition to Loki (Hiddleston) and the expected Dark Elves.  Speaking of natural born sons, Russell has also recently been cast in HBO’s Game of Thrones, the phenomenal series based on George R.R. Martin’s novels.  Russell will star as Brynden “Blackfish” Tully, an elder warrior of House Tully and adviser to Robb Stark (Richard Madden).
