TOP 5: The Road to Oscar, SNITCH Interviews, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Character Guide, STAR WARS Roundup, Sony Announces Playstation 4

     February 23, 2013

I’m opening myself up to complete public failure here, but in the spirit of Oscar weekend I thought it might be fun to share with peers and readers alike my picks for tomorrow’s 85th Academy Awards. Worst case scenario, I figure, is that my picks are so woefully off base that I’m quickly offered a well-compensated position within the Republican Party as a polling analyst. High hopes, I know, but ultimately it’s all in the name of fun. Here’s to hoping you the reader will enjoy comparing your predictions against my own and sleeping better at night as a result of your superior Oscar guessing power.

My half-witted Oscar picks aside, this week’s edition features category previews plus Adam and Matt’s own predictions, Snitch interviews with Dwayne Johnson and more, a character guide to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, a roundup of recent Star Wars: Episode VII talk, and Sony’s PlayStation 4 announcement. Something that resembles a brief recap and link to each is starved for your attention after the jump.

1. The Road to Oscar: Category Previews Plus Adam & Matt’s Predictions

In an attempt to provide some perspective to this year’s top categories, Adam has graced us with his “The Road to Oscar” series (Note: I consider any attempt at using Adam’s informative entries to make your own picks more competent than my own to be cheating). Moreover, once you’ve pummeled my picks, you’ll do well to jump over to Matt and Adam’s predictions to see how you fared against our resident “Oscarologists”.

2. SNITCH Interviews with Dwayne Johnson and More

In celebration of its opening weekend, Samantha Cheirif was able to catch up with the cast and director of the action/thriller Snitch (read Dave’s review here). You can watch the most electrifying man in sports entertainment, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson talk about his affection for Steve, Barry Pepper talk about The Lone Ranger, The Walking Dead‘s Jon Bernthal discuss reuniting with Frank Darabont, and read director/co-writer Ric Roman Waugh‘s take on working with Johnson and the rest of the cast at your leisure.

If you’re like me and know just enough about the Marvel Universe to be considered slightly dangerous, Andy Rutt’s “Beginners Guide” to its Guardians of the Galaxy is a solid place to start in order to get acquainted with its history and main characters in preparation of the 2014 film adaptation. If you’re not like me and have already learned all there is to know about Guardians then Andy’s guide is an equally great place to go and mock those who know less than you in the comment section (because that’s what comment sections are for, right?). In either case, study up because there will be a quiz at the end of class.

In the event that you missed out on your daily dose of Star Wars news, rumors, discussion, etc. I’m here to tell you that this past week consisted of a few main items: John Williams is hoping to return and score Episode VII, the film’s plot could focus on Luke, Leia, and Han Solo’s offspring while returning Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher, and Hamill talks the film and his potential involvement.

5. Sony Announces PlayStation 4

On Wednesday Sony announced that its next-gen console will hit the market around “Holiday 2013” and will indeed be called the PlayStation 4. For more details, I recommend you check out our recap article which features videos from the announcement as well as a breakdown of some of the games we can expect from the console. Let me save you the disappointment, though: there are no pics of the console available as of yet. Just an image of the new controller and the life-affirming news that the console will feature more social media integration (cue my sigh of relief).
