TOP 5: CONAN Video Interviews, Rise and Fall of Cult Status, GHOST RIDER Trailer and Images, New BLADE RUNNER, FRIGHT NIGHT Screening

     August 20, 2011

Every once in a while, I like to remind readers that our weekly “Top 5” is a perpetual “work in progress.” That in mind, if you ever find yourself thinking, “Man, I wish Jason wasn’t such an idiot and would do this or that with the ‘Top 5’,” then I’m inviting you to either leave your suggestion in the comments section and/or e-mail me ( The goal is to make the weekly feature as beneficial and entertaining to you, the reader, as possible. So, by all means, let us know if there is something missing that you would like to see. Now, with that out of the way…

In this week’s installment, you’ll find all of our video interviews with the cast of Conan the Barbarian, Matt’s editorial documenting what he views as the rise and fall of cult status, the first trailer and 34 hi-res images from Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, news confirming all of our worst fears regarding a Blade Runner follow-up, and our visit to the Alamo Drafthouse to check out the new Fright Night with stars Anton Yelchin and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. Hit the jump for links and brief recaps for each.

1. CONAN Video Interviews with Jason Momoa, Rose McGowan, Ron Perlman, and Rachel Nichols

So, Matt found a few flaws in director Marcus Nispel’s Conan the Barbarian remake. That doesn’t mean you can’t like the film and/or enjoy the video interviews our own Hunter Daniels conducted with stars Jason Momoa, Rose McGowan, Ron Perlman, and Rachel Nichols.

2. The Rise and Fall of Cult Status

Have you ever enjoyed a pop culture artifact so much that you find yourself personally offended when someone cuts it down? Along those lines, have you ever found yourself liking something less than you once did because it has become popular to the point of being considered “mainstream?” Matt explores these types of behavior and more with regards to cult properties such as The Big Lebowski, Serenity, and Firefly in this editorial on the rise an fall of cult status.

3. GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE Trailer and 34 High Resolution Images

I can’t say I enjoyed much of anything about Mark Steven Johnson’s 2007 take on Ghost Rider. So, with my expectations already at a considerable low and with the first trailer for Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance featuring Nicolas Cage’s Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider urinating fire, I have to say that this installment is already better by default. Click here to check out the trailer and click here for 34 hi-res images from the film.

4. Ridley Scott to Direct New BLADE RUNNER Movie

Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner is one of my all-time favorite films. And while I understand some of my other favorite works such as Halloween and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre receiving multiple remakes/sequels/prequels (I said “understand,” not “condone”), a Blade Runner follow-up is something I just can’t wrap my head around. Nevertheless, as a result of top industry players not valuing my opinion, we get press releases and news updates like the one found here. Here’s to hoping this is all just a bad dream…

5. Collider Sees FRIGHT NIGHT 3D at the Alamo Drafthouse with Anton Yelchin and Christopher Mintz-Plasse

FRIGHT NIGHT alamo drafthouse slice

What’s the best way to spruce up the remake of an ’80s horror classic? Well, I’m not exactly sure, but watching it at the Alamo Drafthouse alongside stars of the film while drinking “Blood Bank Sangria” seems like a good start. Click here to check out Scott Wampler’s recap of the Fright Night remake screening he took partook in alongside stars Anton Yelchin, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Dave Franco.
