TOP 5: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, STAR TREK Sequel, Brad Bird Interview, Another Crazy Week in Trailers

     December 24, 2011

I’m writing to you this afternoon in the late stages of a full-on nostalgia buzz. The reason? Last night, I had the pleasure of taking in a performance of the Beauty and the Beast musical at St. Louis’ beautiful The Fabulous Fox theatre. Thanks to Belle’s “Little Town”, “Something There”, and the Academy Award-winning title track, I’m still giddy and in complete tune with my five-year old self nearly 24 hours after the fact. Now, if I could just get my hands on that old Proton Pack I used to lug around at all times, my return trip to the ’90s would be complete…

…In this week’s “Top 5” you’ll find a collection of items from The Dark Knight Rises, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo interviews with David Fincher, Rooney Mara, and Daniel Craig, tidbits of news from J.J. AbramsStar Trek sequel, director Brad Bird talking about Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, The Incredibles sequel and more, and a recap of what has been yet another crazy week in trailers (Hint: there’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Prometheus, and Wrath of the Titans). Hit the jump for a brief recap and link to each.

1. THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Gets New Trailer(s); Bane Doesn’t Get a New Voice

I know, I know. Big surprise here. One day, when this “Top 5” thing runs its course, I’ll probably look back and see that TDKR made the cut at least 40% of the time in 2011 and 2012. And you know what? I’m completely fine with that. I’m hopelessly intrigued by Christopher Nolan‘s take on the Bat and I’m not afraid to own it every other “Top 5” installation. All of this said, if you’ve yet to watch this new trailer upwards of 15 times, this “sweded” trailer at least once, and/or read up on Nolan’s decline to retouch Bane’s voice, then I advise you take a big gulp of the “Dark Knight Kool-Aid” and do so immediately.

2. THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO Interviews with David Fincher, Rooney Mara, and Daniel Craig

Following Sony’s press junket for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in New York City last weekend, Steve graced our front page with an exclusive interview with the always interesting David Fincher as well as a press conference featuring Fincher and stars Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig. If you have any interest in the pic whatsoever, I think both are worth the time required to check them out. Also, for the sake of balance, I’ll direct you to Matt’s lukewarm review of the film.

3. Tidbits of News from J.J. Abrams’ STAR TREK Sequel

With director J.J. Abrams‘ untitled Star Trek sequel not set to hit theaters until May 17th, 2013, there’s a chance that each of the following bits of news from the pic will turn out to be utterly false and/or irrelevant. For now, though, fans of the franchise who are excited to hear anything about the sequel (i.e. the way I am with TDKR) might be interested in reading how Abrams plans to post-convert the film to 3D (and possibly shoot a little in IMAX), and how none of the members of the original Star Trek series cast are slated to appear in the pic.

With Brad Bird‘s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol receiving critical acclaim and ruling the holiday box-office, I think it’s safe to say that the film is a classic case of “win-win”. That said, while I’m all for hearing Bird discuss working with Tom Cruise on some of the most breathtaking stunts ever to grace the silver screen, I’m far more interested in anything he has to say regarding a sequel to The Incredibles. Regardless of your personal tastes, I think Christina’s video interview with the director has something that may be worthy of your attention.

5. Another Crazy Week in Trailers: THE HOBBIT, PROMETHEUS, WRATH OF THE TITANS

Last week’s “Top 5” saw us combine a slew of trailers into one for the first time. Given that this week presented us with yet another package of much-anticipated cuts, we thought it wise to repeat history. In case you missed them or if you’re looking for a repeat viewing, here’s your gateway to the trailer and poster for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first trailer for Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus, and the first trailer and posters for Jonathan Liebesman‘s Clash of the Titans sequel, Wrath of the Titans.
