TOP 5: DRAFT DAY, Early Reactions to THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, Colbert Replacing Letterman, Drew Goddard Directing THE SINISTER SIX, STREET FIGHTER: ASSASSIN’S FIST

     April 12, 2014

collider-top-5-sliceFor the first time that I can remember since I started writing for Collider in 2010, director Peter Weir‘s The Truman Show made headlines this week when we learned that Paramount is developing a TV series adaptation of the film. While I won’t waste any space today discussing my feelings on the adaptation (mostly because there aren’t any real details to dissect as of now), I will absolutely take this opportunity to talk about my adoration of the film. The Truman Show ranks among my all-time favorites with ease and, if pressed to name a lone favorite, it would likely make that cut too. I actually didn’t watch it until my second year of college, circa 2007, but I credit that first viewing as a benchmark cinematic experience for me; one that helped me begin to understand the impact that a movie could have on a person’s outlook and perception of the world around them. I would eventually go on to dedicate my graduate school research to the film, during which I watched it at least 15 more times; wrote this semi-boring perceptual effects analysis; and wrote/recorded this somewhat less boring seven song record. On paper, these projects were a way to fulfill requirements towards my degree. In reality, it was an excuse to delve further into the headspace of a work that, for all intents and purposes, changed my life.

All personal reflections aside, this week’s Top 5 features interviews for and Matt’s review of Draft Day, early reactions to The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the announcement that Stephen Colbert will replace David Letterman on CBS’ The Late Show, Sony selecting Drew Goddard to direct The Sinister Six, and the first look at Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist. Keep reading for a brief recap and link to each of the above.

1. DRAFT DAY Interviews and Review

I’ll be honest: I’m a sucker for Kevin Costner. His turn as Pa Kent in Man of Steel is still my favorite thing about that movie. Realistically, putting him in a sports movie is the equivalent of movie studios having automatic withdrawal authority on my checking account. It should come as no surprise, then, that I’m excited to check out Draft Day if for no other reason than to see him work his GM magic. If you find yourself similarly caught under Costner’s spell then I recommend checking out Matt’s review and Steve’s video interviews with the man himself, Jennifer Garner, and Terry Crews & Arian Foster.

2. Early Reactions to THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

I’ve been apprehensive about Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 for some time. Aside from the studio’s seemingly unending barrage of clips, trailers, posters, etc., the pic itself just looks to be a little bloated. Although I still plan on seeing it in theaters, when you tack on these overall lukewarm reactions and reviews following the film’s first public screening, it sounds like my gut may have been on the right track.

3. Stephen Colbert to Replace David Letterman on THE LATE SHOW

Having not watched The Late Show in some time, I can’t really make an educated guess as to how Stephen Colbert’s style compares/contrasts with David Letterman’s. On the other hand, having been a fan of The Colbert Report since its debut I can say without any hesitation that I’m thrilled by the idea of Colbert taking the torch from Letterman not only as host but also as a writer and executive producer of CBS’ late night series.

4. Drew Goddard to Direct THE SINISTER SIX

Am I over the moon about the idea of a Sinister Six movie? Not particularly. My only encounter with the group comes from the 90’s Spidey animated series where they were known as the “Insidious Six” and that memory of them is fond enough to last me a lifetime. That said, my love for The Cabin in the Woods makes me interested in any future Drew Goddard directorial efforts by default. Therefore, Sony just earned my interest by selecting Goddard as director of their The Sinister Six feature; a feat I’m sure was of utmost importance during their selection process.

5. Exclusive: STREET FIGHTER: ASSASSIN’S FIST “Ryu” Teaser Trailer

As far as sheer nostalgia goes, there are few games that hit home with me like Street Fighter II does. To this day, you throw anything SF II related at me and there’s a good chance that I’m going to embrace it with Dhalsim-esque outstretched arms (if you haven’t checked out Matt Leone’s oral history of the game, I insist that you do this instant). This in mind, it is with great pride that I can say that I’m part of the site that premiered the “Ryu” teaser trailer for director Joey Ansah’s multi-format series Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist this past week. How my parents aren’t beaming with pride right now, I’ll never know.
