As lame as it may sound, I used this weekend’s Friday night to take in my second viewing of The Dark Knight Rises. Moreover, while the last thing a picture that made over $1 billion at the worldwide box office needs is a voice in its corner, I have to say that I enjoyed TDKR more the second-time around. While some aspects still bothered me (the final mix on Bane’s voice, why Jim Gordon would carry around in his coat pocket a confession written on giant-sized paper that he knows will have dire consequences, etc.), I found other elements to be better than I remembered (scenes between Bruce Wayne and Alfred, the brutality of Bane and Batman’s first fight, etc.). While it’s not without its problems, I stand by my belief that TDKR was the best superhero movie of the summer and a fitting end to a historic trilogy.
Random Batman thoughts aside, on tap this week is the first teaser trailer and poster for director J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness, a plethora of The Hobbit coverage including Dave’s review of An Unexpected Journey, a new poster for Zack Snyder‘s Man of Steel, first reactions to Django Unchained, and what could very well be one of the final Top 5 entries for the oft and aforementioned The Dark Knight Rises. A brief recap and link to each awaits should you choose to pursue it after the jump.
1. First Trailer and Poster for STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS
The first teaser trailer and poster for Star Trek Into Darkness made their way onto the interwebs this week and while the two were primarily met with excitement, there were strong similarities between the Trek poster and this poster that proved hard to miss. Is it the most original thing we’ve ever seen? Probably not. On the bright side, at least no one is comparing Into Darkness‘ first poster release with this embarrassment.
2. THE HOBBIT Review, Images, and More of the Like
With Peter Jackson’s return to Middle Earth, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, slated to hit theaters in less than a week, Dave graced the site with his review of the pic earlier in the week. In case reading reviews before you see the movie isn’t your thing, though, we’ve also got the first image from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, a sweet Hobbit giveaway, the first image from The Hobbit: There and Back Again, and a considerable amount of other Hobbit coverage here.
3. New MAN OF STEEL Poster
This week’s release of a new Man of Steel poster brings about an intriguing question: have Kryptonite handcuffs been invented or is Supes just playing nice so as to not embarrass whoever had the fail-proof idea of trying to apprehend him via regular cuffs? We may have to wait until June 2013 for the answer, but here’s to hoping that next week’s new trailer release will provide some insight into whether or not Snyder’s Kal-El is the “play nice” type.
4. First Reactions to DJANGO UNCHAINED
Tarantino’s Django Unchained is probably my most anticipated movie for the rest of the year. As such, when reactions from the film’s first screenings started popping up online last Sunday, you can bet that I was anxious to pick up on any sliver of enthusiasm said reactions might bring. If you found yourself in a similar state of mind then Adam’s reaction roundup article and this batch of new assets are probably just what you need to keep momentum alive and well into December 25th.
5. THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Gets an “Honest Trailer”
The Dark Knight Rises and I have enjoyed a good run here on the Top 5 with the film being included in our weekly recap no less than 428 times (my math may be a little off). That said, I fear this may be one of if not the final go-rounds for the two of us. With the film hitting shelves on Blu-ray this week we not only got a nifty featurette taking us behind-the-scenes of Batman and Bane’s final showdown, but we also received an “Honest Trailer” for the film which does well to poke fun at many of its glaring holes (i.e. how does Bruce Wayne get back to Gotham?) while missing the mark on some (i.e. why is it crazy to think that maybe a year and a half of being “The Batman” would wreak havoc on a person’s body?).
