Rotten Tomatoes Users Rank X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST as the Most Anticipated Movie of the Summer

     March 13, 2014

The summer movie season is just around the corner, and while 2014 isn’t as overloaded with crazy releases as 2015, there is still plenty to look forward to.  We’ve got sequels, reboots, sequel-reboots, remakes, and even the rare original story all slated to open, and the folks over at Rotten Tomatoes have put together a ranked list of the most anticipated films based on the site’s user rankings.  Coming in at #1 on the list with 100% “want to see” from a total of 110,869 votes is director Bryan Singer’s superhero sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past.  Having helmed the first X-Men in 2000, Singer is one of the godfathers of the modern superhero movie era.  It’s not exactly a shock that fans are eager to see his return to the X-Men franchise, since the time-bending DOFP infuses the new X-Men: First Class cast with the classic X-Men actors from the original films.

Hit the jump to take a look at the Top 10, which includes a couple of surprises.

the-amazing-spider-man-2-andrew-garfield-emma-stoneX-Men: Days of Future Past coming in at number one on the Rotten Tomatoes list of anticipated summer blockbusters makes sense, but the number two choice is a tad surprising.  Audience response to Sony’s Spider-Man reboot The Amazing Spider-Man was generally positive when the film hit theaters in 2012, but it all felt a bit unenthusiastic.  The film did pull in over $750 million worldwide, though, and apparently fans are quite keen on the sequel, as The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ranks at number two on the Rotten Tomatoes list with 99% “want to see” and 98,643 votes.  The follow-up promises a glut of villains, including Electro, Green Goblin, and Rhino, so maybe it’s the spectacle of it all that has RT users pumped.

Despite the franchise’s box office power, director Michael Bay’s sequel-reboot Transformers: Age of Extinction falls at number nine on the list with 98% and 103,792 votes, while the animated sequel How to Train Your Dragon 2 takes the number three spot, followed by Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Marvel’s big gamble Guardians of the Galaxy.  The list also includes the comedies Neighbors and 22 Jump Street, but not Seth MacFarlane’s Ted follow-up A Million Ways to Die in the West, slated for May.  Also failing to make the Top 10 is the Wachowski siblings’ original sci-fi adventure Jupiter Ascending.

While many of these aforementioned films would make my personal anticipated summer movies list, I’d also happily include Jupiter Ascending, the Shailene Woodley-fronted drama The Fault in Our Stars, the Tom Cruise actioner Edge of Tomorrow, and Bong Joon-Ho’s long-awaited Snowpiercer.
