‘Transformers: The Last Knight’: Michael Bay Gives Video Tour of the Detroit Set

     July 28, 2016

As per usual when it comes to the not-so-mighty Transformers franchise, director Michael Bay has been relentless in hyping the film’s production on social media. He recently teased the arrival of the Combaticons with the picture of a green truck, and today, he dropped an extended peak behind the scenes of Transformers: The Last Knight, which is currently shooting in Detroit with star Mark Wahlberg. In the latest video, which Bay posted to the Transformers Facebook page, Bay uses a selfie stick to give us a clear view of the preparations that go into a single scene in the movie.

Frankly, this is one of the more fascinating things that Bay has released on any of his social media accounts for a variety of reasons. In the most basic sense, this is the real work of a movie set – crew finding their placings, cast members getting some much needed down time, and the director wandering around with a selfie stick. You laugh, but that last part is increasingly a crucial job for big-budget filmmakers. Don’t believe me? Check out how many social media videos F. Gary Gray has appeared in for Fast 8, and compare it to how many he did for Straight Outta Compton. Regardless, this is the kind of stuff that draws in dedicated cinephiles, even to movies-as-dumpster-fires like Transformers.

Beyond that, however, there’s a strange intimacy to how Bay talks with his crew and Wahlberg that is unique. The way Bay talks about enjoying working with foreigners; the way Wahlberg discusses the contents of the salad he’s having for lunch to keep it, as Bay puts it, “tight”; and the way the entire crew seems to have their own language that you can hear teeming in the background all gives this video an inherent interest. I have little hope that the movie that’s being made will have even a modicum of the fascination that’s felt here, but I am quite sure that there will be a lot of explosions, which is nice.
