Details on a TRON 3 Teaser That Will Appear on the TRON: LEGACY DVD – Updated

     January 22, 2011

I’m among the defenders of Tron: Legacy.  Mostly because of the visuals (duh), but I think the filmmakers put a lot of interesting ideas up on screen, then failed to explore them fully.  Legacy does not live up to its full potential, but lays the groundwork for a great sequel.

We know that Disney always hoped to establish a franchise.  The studio commissioned a sequel script last April and is reportedly very close to an official greenlight.  (Not to mention the animated series Tron: Uprising on Disney XD.)  But the extent of Disney’s planning may surprise you.  A new report suggests that Disney already has a teaser for Tron 3 in the can, and it will appear as a Tron: Legacy DVD extra.  As long as you don’t mind spoilers for the teaser or Tron: Legacy, hit the jump for details.

[Update: There’s a listing for “Additional Production Material” for the Tron: Legacy DVD that, if it is this teaser, adds a bit of intrigue to the story.  Details below]

AICN was contacted by someone who worked on the November shoot who indicates three scenes were filmed.

The first is between Bruce Boxleitner as Alan Bradley, and Dan Shor reprising his role from the original 1982 Tron (credited as “Popcorn co-worker” in the real world, “Ram” in The Grid).  Apparently Shor’s character ran the “Flynn Lives” campaign and is destroying the relevant data and files when Alan finds him.  Shor quips, “Why did Kevin give you the cool name?”  (As you probably know, Alan’s program name is “Tron.”)

The second features Olivia Wilde as Quorra.  She rides up to ENCOM on Sam’s Ducati and causes a stir when she reveals to the swarming press that she spoke to Kevin Flynn… yesterday.  (Wait a minute, didn’t Flynn sacrifice himself at the end of the movie, before Quorra made it out of The Grid?  Do you think maybe that wasn’t Jeff Bridges’ last appearance in the franchise that revolves around his character(s)?)

The third is the simplest — just text on screens — but perhaps the most loaded.  Edward Dillinger (played by Cillian Murphy in Tron: Legacy) and father Ed Dillinger (played by David Warner in the original Tron) enigmatically discuss how everything is coming together as they planned.

Given his stature, Murphy’s role in the film amounted to a glorified Easter egg, so you had to know his character would be featured in a teaser of this sort.  I don’t know exactly what the Dillinger family has planned, but it sure sounds like the catalyst for Tron 3.

[Update: Brendon Connelly over at Bleeding Cool did some digging, and found a listing for something called Disc Roars on the BBFC.  He deduces this is “more than likely to be the ‘secret’ teaser, and that Disc Roars is nothing but a smokescreen codename.”  I’m not too familiar with the BBFC, but I always trust Brendans, even if they spell it with an “o-n.”

Disc Roars is 2 minutes, 51 seconds and lists Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, and Olivia Wilde among the cast.  Wilde has a place in the three aforementioned scenes, but Bridges and Hedlund do not.  If Disc Roars is the teaser, than the scope may be even bigger than we first thought.  On the other hand, it could be something entirely unrelated — a Tron: Legacy featurette or some kind of alternate footage that features the three stars.  Time will tell.]

If you’re up for another Tron film, check out our interview with director Joseph Kosinski in which he touches on what he’d like to see in a sequel.  As always, the comments section below is open for speculation.
