‘Tulip Fever’ Trailer: Alicia Vikander Wants to GTFO of a Loveless Marriage

     April 28, 2016

The Weinstein Company has released the first trailer for Tulip Fever. Based on the novel of the same name by Deborah MaggoachTulip Fever stars the ubiquitous Alicia Vikander as Sophia, a young woman in 17th Century Amsterdam who is married off to wealthy older man, Cornelius (Christoph Waltz). When her husband commissions a set of portraits, Sophia begins a passionate affair with the artist, Jan (Dane DeHaan), risking it all for love. With Amsterdam’s Tulip market booming, the lovers gamble everything on tulip bulbs in the hopes of raising enough money to run away together.

Directed by The Other Boleyn Girl helmer Justin Chadwick from a script by Tom Stoppard, the romantic period drama also stars Jack O’Connell, Judi DenchHolliday Grainger, Matthew Morrison, Tom HollanderCara Delevingne, and..um, Zach GalifianakisTulip Fever arrives in theaters July 15th, check out the first trailer below.

After dominating 2015 with a breakout year that included a blockbuster (The Man from UNCLE), a pensive drama (Ex Machina) and an Oscar-winning turn in a romantic period piece (The Danish Girl), Vikander is looking to duplicate her success in 2016 with…a blockbuster (Jason Bourne), a pensive drama (The Light Between Oceans), and a romantic period piece (Tulip Fever). Aside from the fact that Vikander is always a delight to watch, he film itself looks a serviceable sultry costume drama, and Waltz is ever the finest force of villainy and oppression. Amsterdam has a fascinating cultural history, so given that Tulip Fever‘s story is rooted in its historical setting, hopefully the film will lean into some of that promise.

Here’s the official Tulip Fever synopsis.

Set in 17th century Amsterdam, TULIP FEVER follows a married woman (Alicia Vikander) who begins a passionate affair with an artist (Dane DeHaan) hired to paint her portrait. The lovers gamble on the booming market for tulip bulbs as a way to raise money to run away together.
