Weekend Box Office: ‘Boo! A Madea Halloween’ Holds Off ‘Jack Reacher 2’

     October 23, 2016

If you dropped by yesterday to check out Friday’s box office performance, then the weekend’s top five spots should look very familiar to you. As expected, Tyler Perry‘s Boo! A Madea Halloween claimed the #1 spot for its October weekend debut over the Tom Cruise-starring sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. Rounding out the top five were Ouija: Origin of EvilThe Accountant, and The Girl on the Train.

Perry’s Halloween film now has the fourth best opening in his brand with $27.6 million; it’s the third-best within the Madea franchise. And speaking of franchises, the Jack Reacher sequel topped the 2012 original by almost $8 million, taking in $23 million even this weekend; an additional $31 million came courtesy of international markets. The Ouija prequel, however, fell short of the 2014 original by more than $5.8 million.

Outside of the top five but still within the top ten was Fox’s debut comedy Keeping Up with the Joneses from director Greg Mottola and starring Gal GadotJon HammIsla Fisher, and Zach Galifianakis. The spy comedy only managed a total take of $5.6 million this weekend.

Michael Moore in Trumpland, the pop-up documentary that surprised pretty much everybody, pulled in $50,000 in two theaters (New York City and Los Angeles) and snagged a #1 spot in iTunes, reports Exhibitor Relations. It also looks like A24’s Moonlight fell a bit short of predictions that it would crack the Top 20 per-theater openings, but in a sheer coincidence with the studios’ name, it takes the 24th spot on that list with a $103,294 average over just four theaters.
