New VEEP Season Two Trailer Teases More Humor and Humiliations From the Office Of the VP

     March 18, 2013

HBO’s political comedy Veep, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus as hapless Vice President Selina Meyer, was one of last year’s best and most overlooked series.  From the creators of the masterful British series The Thick Of ItVeep has that show’s same perceptive understanding of the chaotic ineptitude of politics, presented with acid wit.  The Office of the Vice President should be the second-highest in the land, but in Veep we see it instead as a marginalized den of the bewildered.  One of the great, subtle running gags of the series is Selina Meyer asking her secretary if the President has called, with the reply always being a resounding “no.” (that dynamic was also played up in the first teaser for this upcoming season)  The new spot shows more of Selina’s fight to establish some kind of legacy in the hostile environs of Washington, presumably without much luck.  Hit the jump for the trailer.

One of Veep’s greatest gifts is for highlighting gaffs, of which there are always many, like in the opening sequence of the trailer when Selina asks the ladies to all chant “free” and the men to chant “dom/dumb” (although from the smirk on her face that may well have been intentional).

Things seem to generally be imploding for Selina though, with the incredibly capable Sue (Sufe Bradshaw) looking for an out and the manipulative rat (who is terrifyingly effective at his job) Dan (Reid Scott) getting bored.  Worse still for Selina, there appear to be plenty of visits from Jonah (Timothy Simmons), a.k.a. the Jolly Green Jizzface (for viewers though, the more Jonah the better as he’s one of the best parts of the show).  It also looks like we might get to know the subordinates a little better, with even Gary (Tony Hale) managing to get some semblance of a personal life (and not just a fake dog like Mike).

Above all, let’s rejoice that Clay Davis (Isiah Whitlock, Jr.) is in Washington (ok, I don’t know his new character’s name yet but it’s Clay Davis you guys).

Veep returns Sunday April 14th at 10pm on HBO.
