First WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS Trailer Takes Zac Efron to the Electronic Music Scene

     May 19, 2015

Warner Bros. just unveiled the very first We Are Your Friends trailer. The film is directed by Max Joseph (of Catfish: The TV Show fame) and stars Zac Efron as Cole, an aspiring DJ determined to create a track that will “set the world on fire.” However, things get complicated when an older DJ named James (Wes Bentley) takes him under his wing and Cole winds up falling for James’ girlfriend, Sophie (Emily Ratajkowski).

Check out the We Are Your Friends trailer below. The film also stars Jonny WestonShiloh Fernandez and Jon Bernthal, and is due in theaters on August 28, 2015.

First of all, you’re either in a demographic that this movie appeals to, or you’re not. I’m essentially in the “get off my lawn” stage of caring about young DJs trying to make it, but I can’t fault the trailer for this. Joseph has a lot of style, understands what will get people interested in this movie, and uses it for all its worth. He has a graphic based around Emily Ratajkowski’s cleavage, ok? The man knows what he’s doing.

We Are Your Friends feels like the early days of Entourage, but focused on the music industry instead of film. Four buddies are looking to make it big, and help the talent (in this case, Zac Efron) achieve fame so they can ride his coattails. It looks like a flashy and very bro-tastic take on finding and defining success in an age of social media, with the main lesson as: whatever you do, just don’t end up in the Valley.

Here’s the full We Are Your Friends synopsis:

“We Are Your Friends” is about what it takes to find your voice. Set in the world of electronic music and Hollywood nightlife, an aspiring 23-year-old DJ named Cole (Efron) spends his days scheming with his childhood friends and his nights working on the one track that will set the world on fire. All of this changes when he meets a charismatic but damaged older DJ named James (Bentley), who takes him under his wing. Things get complicated, however, when Cole starts falling for James’ much younger girlfriend, Sophie (Ratajkowski). With Cole’s forbidden relationship intensifying and his friendships unraveling, he must choose between love, loyalty, and the future he is destined for.
