Dolores is further along to breaking the damsel in distress routine. As shown in new images from Westworld Episode 5, the oldest A.I. in the amusement park (played by Evan Rachel Wood) is trading in her prairie dress for a more battle-appropriate ensemble.
The episode title alone is intriguing: Episode 5 is called “Contrapasso,” an Italian word that pops up in passages from Dante Alighieri’s Inferno where souls in hell suffer punishments proportionate to their sins. According to the official plot synopsis: “Dolores, William (Jimmi Simpson), and Logan (Ben Barnes) reach Pariah, a town built on decadence and transgression — and are recruited for a dangerous mission.” (This is probably the “best ride in the park” Logan was talking about at the end of Episode 4). Meanwhile, “The Man in Black (Ed Harris) meets an unlikely ally in his search to unlock the maze.”
While that’s cryptic enough, we see Dolores and William unsettled by something Logan says around a bar table, but other images see the maiden getting her hands dirty, as well as what seems like a tarot reading. Perhaps the latter is the next step for Dolores finding the maze. Elsewhere, the young boy we saw Dr. Ford (Anthony Hopkins) conversing with in the desert has returned. Now that we’ve seen how Ford really feels about the hosts, the boy’s presence can’t be because he enjoys the company, right?
As you chew on that, HBO also released titles for Episodes 6 and 7: “The Adversary” and “Trompe L’Oeil,” the latter of which refers to something that misleads the senses, usually a painting that offers the illusion of a real object. Episode 6 could be referring to something that the Man in Black says in the promo for “Contrapasso,” “I’ve made a worthy adversary.”
