‘What We Do In the Shadows’ Sequel Gets a Delightful Title

     January 25, 2016

While Marvelites are waiting to see what Taika Waititi does with Thor: Ragnarok, the director has another exciting prospect coming down the pipeline: a sequel to What We Do in the Shadows. His mockumentary-style vampire comedy was a surprise hit, and the filmmaker teased the follow-up would focus on those equally hilarious werewolves. Now, while Waititi makes his press rounds at the Sundance Film Festival, he revealed the title for the sequel.

Waititi confirmed to Crave Online that he and his What We Do in the Shadows co-writer Jemaine Clement are “trying to write a werewolves spin-off” that will “most likely be the next thing” he does. “It’s going to be called We’re Wolves, like ‘We are wolves.’ We’re Wolves.”

Clement, who also played the vampire Vladislav in the first film, told Stuff.co.nz last year that the sequel will focus on Anton, played by Rhys Darby. The character had a scene-stealing moment in What We Do in the Shadows during a confrontation with the vamps, granting us one of the best lines of 2015, “What are we?” “Werewolves not swear-wolves.” The quote also makes We’re Wolves the perfect title.

Waititi is also working on a World War II comedy “about a kid in the Hitler Youth,” though the chances for We’re Wolves being his next project look good. The director attended Sundance to premiere his latest film, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, featuring newcomer Julian Dennison as “bad egg” Ricky, a defiant city kid who becomes a fugitive with his new foster parent when an event threatens to send him to another home. The first teaser has already debuted online, and Collider’s Matt Goldberg praised the film for having “the same level of humor and heart” as What We Do in the Shadows in light of some of its story constrictions.

Waititi, meanwhile, will start filming Thor: Ragnarok with Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo, and Cate Blanchett this June.
