First WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS Trailer from Directors Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi

     April 30, 2014

Even if you’re burnt out from vampire flicks over the last decade or so, you’ve got to at least take a look at the latest effort from Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi.  The vampire mockumentary, What We Do in the Shadows, was written and directed by the duo, who also star alongside Jonathan Brugh and Cori Gonzalez-Macuer.  The mockumentary is about a group of vampires who live together in Wellington, New Zealand, and explores mundane struggles like paying rent, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts.  Steve had a chance to talk to Clement and Waititi during Sundance, where their film generated a good amount of positive buzz.  Now that we’ve got the first look at the film in its first trailer, it’s easy to see why; it’s a very refreshing take on what’s become a stale genre, and shows off Clement and Waititi’s signature touch.  Take a look after the jump. (Watch your speakers since it’s, unfortunately, on auto-play.)

News of the first What We Do in the Shadows trailer comes courtesy of the Flight of the Conchords Facebook page:

Follow the lives of Viago (Taika Waititi), Deacon (Jonathan Brugh), and Vladislav (Jemaine Clement) – three flatmates who are just trying to get by and overcome life’s obstacles-like being immortal vampires who must feast on human blood. Hundreds of years old, the vampires are finding that beyond sunlight catastrophes, hitting the main artery, and not being able to get a sense of their wardrobe without a reflection-modern society has them struggling with the mundane like paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts.
