There’s yet another Sherlock Holmes adaptation on the horizon, but this one promises to be mighty different. Per Deadline, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly are reteaming not for a Step Brothers sequel (sadly), but to star in Holmes & Watson, a comedy take on the iconic sleuthing duo. Ferrell is onboard to play Holmes, while Reilly will play the loyal James Watson.
Ferrell is reuniting with his Get Hard director Etan Cohen on the pic, which Sony Pictures originally purchased as a starring vehicle for Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen. Although that iteration of the project stalled, the film gained new life when Reilly became interested and the schedules for all involved coalesced. The plan now is to go into production right after Thanksgiving, meaning we could see Holmes & Watson hit theaters sometime next year.
While Ferrell and Reilly were absolutely stellar in the R-rated Step Brothers, this Holmes & Watson comedy is being envisioned as a PG-13 pic, so it’ll be more in line with the duo’s Talladega Nights in terms of crudeness. Cohen made a name for himself scripting Idiocracy and Tropic Thunder before making his feature directorial debut with last year’s successful Ferrell/Kevin Hart comedy Get Hard.
The world is not lacking for Sherlock Holmes adaptations at the moment, between the beloved BBC series Sherlock, CBS’ solid Elementary, and the developing third installment in the Robert Downey Jr./Jude Law feature film franchise (which is apparently gaining steam), but Holmes & Watson proves to be different if only because of the buffoonery at which Ferrell and Reilly excel. While I’ll admit this news would be considerably more exciting if Adam McKay were writing and directing, the now Oscar-nominated director is currently busy prepping a new drama starring Jennifer Lawrence called Bad Blood, so the timing wouldn’t have worked out anyway.
What do you think, folks? Are you up for yet another take on Sherlock Holmes and James Watson? Is it nice to see Ferrell and Reilly reteaming on another original project or are you still waiting for Step Brothers 2? Sound off in the comments below.
