EASY A Director Will Gluck to Helm Disney’s Untitled Lottery Project

     May 29, 2015

Easy A and Friends with Benefits helmer Will Gluck has signed on to direct Walt Disney Studios’ untitled lottery project with Dan Lin (The Lego Movie, Sherlock Holmes) attached to produce. Gluck will also oversee Martin Hynes‘ re-write of the script, originally titled Lucky Guy, converting the formerly male-led script to a female-centric film.

Per THR, “The project centers on a consistently unlucky woman whose streak of bad continues when everyone in her small town wins a lottery except for her. But it turns out to be a blessing in disguise that will ultimately allow her to save the town from ruin.”  I’m fascinated that Disney is converting a previously male-led script to a female-centric project. Actresses, writers, and audiences have been actively campaigning for more female-led films in recent years, and looking at the heaps of cash pulled in by films like The Hunger Games, Maleficent, Frozen, and Gravity, among others, the numbers are getting harder and harder to argue with.

It could bode well that the studio thinks a female-led version will be more successful, but I’ll have to see what the finale version of the story and the character look like before jumping for joy at Disney’s progressive ways. I will say, aside from the Black Widow marketing fiasco and the subsequent outcry over her arc in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Disney has delivered some excellent female protagonists this year, from the dynamic duo at the heart of Tomorrowland, to the inspirationally good-natured title heroine of Cinderella, and I’d love, love, love to see them continue that trend.
