Kumiko The Treasure Hunter is David Zellner’s darkly comedic odyssey that follows Academy Award-nominee Rinko Kikuchi in the title role as a frustrated office worker whose imagination is her only escape from her boring life. When Kumiko discovers a mysterious, battered VHS tape of a popular film she’s mistaken for a documentary, she becomes obsessed with finding the film’s depiction of a suitcase of stolen cash buried somewhere in the desolate, frozen landscape of North Dakota. She sets off from Tokyo in search of the treasure and finds herself on a dangerous adventure unlike anything she’s seen in the movies.
