Woody Allen Adds Blake Lively, Parker Posey, and Corey Stoll for Next Film

     August 4, 2015

Filmmaker Woody Allen has finalized the cast for his next project. We learned earlier this year that he’d be reuniting with Jesse Eisenberg and working with Kristen Stewart and Bruce Willis for the first time on his next movie, and now the main cast has been filled out by Jeannie Berlin, Blake Lively, Parker Posey, Corey Stoll, and Ken Stott, with Anna Camp, Stephen Kunken, Sari Lennick, and Paul Schneider co-starring. Production is set to begin this month and will take place in both New York and Los Angeles.

As with every new Woody Allen project, plot details and a title are being kept firmly under wraps. But I’m enthused to see Allen working with Posey again. She and Emma Stone are the best thing about Allen’s latest film, Irrational Man, and Posey was able to make a fairly unlikeable character super compelling in that picture. As will happen when you make one movie a year, Allen is hit and miss. Irrational Man is a bit of a mixed bag, with impressive turns from Stone, Posey, and Joaquin Phoenix standing out in an otherwise “fine” film—it feels like a remix of Allen’s past projects, most strongly resembling a lighter version of Match Point.

But after this next film, Allen is poised to do something he’s never done before: make a TV show. He aims to start shooting his six-episode Amazon series later this year or early next year, which will mark a break in routine for the filmmaker who usually just moves from film to film. Plot and casting details for his Amazon series are unknown at this time, but Allen got candid this spring in revealing that he regrets agreeing to make the series due to fears it won’t be any good. That and he doesn’t really know how to make a TV show. Whatever the quality of the end result, it should be supremely interesting to see the veteran writer/director tackle longform storytelling.
