‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Deleted Mall Scene Goes Full 80s

     September 12, 2016

Ladies and gentlemen, glimpse the 1980s X-Men fun that might have been. You’ve probably heard all about X-Men: Apocalypse‘s deleted mall scene by now. It featured prominently some of the film’s promos, it popped up on social media (and added fuel to the rumor fire that Taylor Swift would cameo as Dazzler), and both director Bryan Singer and producer Simon Kinberg spoke openly about it during their rounds of press. Well now, with the Apocalypse Blu-ray release just around the corner, the scene has finally hit the web.

And it’s fine. Apocalypse was a standout dud in a summer full of studio misfires, so it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that the mall scene isn’t exactly a revelation, but it is fun, and fun goes a long way. You know what else goes a long way? Personality, and it’s got more personality than the rest of the movie combined. For some reason, Apocalypse was determined to treat its period setting as nothing more than window dressing (unlike First Class and Days of Future Past, which found ways to make the time period integral to the story), and the mall montage does a pretty good job of showing why that’s such a missed opportunity. Speaking of missed opportunities, Jubilee also gets to use her powers a bit.

Check it out for all its glory below… well, almost all. Tragically, the effects for break-dancing Nightcrawler were never completed. But it lives ever-on in our imaginations.

X-Men: Apocalypse arrives on Blu-ray and DVD on October 4, 2016.

Here’s the official synopsis:

“Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.”
