Oscar Isaac’s X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Costume Will Be a Mix of Practical and Digital Effects

     January 22, 2015

While superhero movies have been en vogue for a while now, more and more “highly regarded” actors are starting to wade into the genre’s waters.  With 20th Century Fox’s X-Men: First Class, the studio hit the jackpot in terms of cast.  Michael Fassbender, Jennifer LawrenceJames McAvoy, and Nicholas Hoult are among the most exciting actors working today, and for the titular villain role in the next X-Men film, X-Men: Apocalypse, director Bryan Singer nabbed another fantastic actor: Oscar Isaac.  Between Inside Llewyn Davis and A Most Violent Year, Isaac has proven himself to be an immense talent, and his role in X-Men (not to mention Star Wars: The Force Awakens) shows that he’s more than willing to tackle commercial fare in addition to the smaller-scale dramatic stuff.

With X-Men: Apocalypse set to start production this spring, Isaac is no doubt in the midst of finding out how he’ll physically come alive on the screen as the titular mutant—a hulking, formidable enemy who’s one of the oldest living mutants in the X-Men universe.

x-men-apocalypseSpeaking with Yahoo! UK, Isaac revealed that his look for Apocalypse will actually be pulled off through a couple of techniques:

“It’ll be a mix [of practical and digital]. I haven’t had a script so I haven’t had a chance to look through the script and see what the exact requirements are, but I think it’ll be a mixture of physical, aided with some robotic technology.”

That’s pretty crazy, but kind of necessary given Apocalypse’s massive physique—Isaac’s in fine shape, but let’s be honest here: he’s no Dwayne Johnson (who is, though?).  I’ll be interested to see how extensive the visual effects are, given that those used on Michael Shannon in Man of Steel were nearly invisible even though his entire costume was created via computers.

It’ll be a long while before we get our first glimpse at Isaac in character as Apocalypse, but I’m definitely looking forward to his addition to the X-Men universe.  X-Men: Apocalypse will open in theaters on May 27, 2016.
