‘Zootopia’ Makes AFI’s Top 10 Films of the Year List

     December 8, 2016

The American Film Institute has released their annual Top 10 lists of the best TV shows and films of the year. Last year, the deadline was moved to allow for Star Wars: The Force Awakens to potentially make the cut for 2015, which it did, but this year’s somewhat unusual pick is Zootopia. It’s not that Zootopia doesn’t deserve a spot on the list (or that Star Wars didn’t either) — these are great movies — but when paired with such assured Oscar heavyweights as La La Land and Manchester by the Sea, it’s surprising (in a good way!)

As for TV, the list gets just about everything right, from dramas The Americans and Better Call Saul to comedies Atlanta and Veep. But This Is Us? It’s a guilty pleasure, sure, and it’s unabashedly popular, but is it one of the best TV series of the year (a year when almost 500 series aired)? Not exactly. The Night Of is another questionable choice, although no list is ever perfect. Still, we can all be happy for Stranger Things!

The much-heralded O.J.: Made in America documentary also received a special award from the AFI, and you can read Chris Cabin’s full review of it here.
